Squirrels can be nice and entertaining to watch. However, when they invade people’s homes, eat vegetation, destroy landscaping, and scare desirable birds away, it quickly becomes annoying rather the cute and entertaining displays. Though, squirrels might be essentially dangerous but they can carry diseases such as rabies.

If you are curious about noises coming out from your walls but you can’t figure out what is causing them. Then the following signs can help you to determine whether you have a squirrel or bunch of them living in your home:
§ Squirrel nest in tree cavities around your home
§ Scurrying, scratching or scuffing noises in your walls, ceilings or the attic
§ Squirrel droppings in your rafters and other places
§ The presence of squirrels on your roof
DAMAGES CAUSED BY SQUIRRELS
Damage to wiring. Just as it is with other rodents, squirrels teeth keeps growing continuously. Therefore, to keep the teeth sharper, they must chew with it constantly. Squirrels can chew on anything, including the wiring in your walls. And this poses serious safety and fire hazards which can eventually leads to a fire outbreak.
Damage to shingles
If there is a small hole, a squirrel can chew at it to make the hole bigger for easier access to your attic area. It is worthy to note that; when blocking holes to prevent squirrels and other animals from gaining access to your home, be sure that none of them is trapped inside. This is because adults ones can cause severe damage by chewing to regain entrance to reach their young ones. Moreover, if the chewing persists, heavy wire mesh can be placed over the problem area temporarily.
Damage to siding
If a squirrel finds an opportunity to get through some damaged siding, it can chew these damaged areas and complicated the problems more. The damage cause by the squirrels can allow moisture or rainwater from the air to get into the wood of your home, thereby creating more damage and allowing insects and some other pests to gain entrance to your home.
Damage to insulation
Squirrels and other rodents are known to make nest in insulation. This can create holes in the insulation or bare areas where heat or cool air can escape easier, thereby making the costs of heating and cooling higher, and not forgetting the costs that will be incurred in getting it fixed.
Damage to gardens
Just like other rodents, squirrels can cause severe damage to plants and landscaping in many ways. They like digging in lawns for nuts and chewing on the bark and twigs of trees and shrubbery. They also dig for planted bulbs. But the worst of it all is, squirrels have extreme appetites and can quickly eat up the crop of a vegetable garden or fruit tree. Similar to humans in act, they mostly wait until the fruits or vegetables are ripe enough to eat, which makes the loss of the crop more saddening to the gardener. Regular trimming of shrubs and vines and the pruning of overhanging tree limbs may discourage squirrels from causing problems in the home.
